Venue and Local Information

IMO 2015 will be held in the northern city of Chiang Mai, which is the second most important city in Thailand after the capital, Bangkok, and a major tourist destination with a rich cultural heritage, artistic tradition and stunning natural beauty.

Getting to Chiang Mai

The easiest way to get to Chiang Mai from most countries is by air. Chiang Mai International Airport is served by direct flights from a number of major cities. You can also fly to Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi or Don Mueang Airport and, from there, catch a connecting flight (approx. 1 hour) or continue on to Chiang Mai by train (12-14 hours) or bus (10 hours).

Currency

Thai Baht (BHT) is the official currency. Major credit cards are accepted by hotels, large shops and restaurants.

Local time

Indochina Time zone (ICT), i.e. 7 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT+7).

Weather

July is the rainy season in Thailand. The weather is usually hot and humid. The average temperature is between 24ºC and 32ºC (between 75ºF and 90ºF). We suggest you bring an umbrella or a raincoat as well as some sunscreen.

Electricity

Voltage in Thailand is 220V at 50Hz. Electric sockets accept two round pins or perpendicular flat pins plugs. Appliances designed to operate on 110/120V need a voltage converter and a plug adapter.

Water

We do not recommend drinking tap water in Chiang Mai or anywhere else in Thailand. Drinking water will be provided at the organization sites. You can also buy bottled water which is inexpensive and readily available.

Language

The official language of Thailand is Thai while English is widely understood and spoken in major cities.

Mosquito Repellent

Although the city of Chiang Mai does not have malaria concern, mosquito bites are annoying and can cause allergic reactions. To reduce risk of mosquito bites, apply mosquito repellent when you go outdoors.
