Welcome message from Chairman, IPST Governing Board, Professor Emeritus Dr. Montri Chulavatanatol

Welcome one and all to the 56th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) and to Chiang Mai Province. We are proud to organize the 56th IMO in this northern province of Thailand which was once the capital city of the ancient Lanna Kingdom that is well known for its unique culture and tradition.

Where academic competition is concerned, it is undeniable that the International Mathematical Olympiad is among the ones that come first to the people’s minds. It is not only the oldest international academic Olympiad but also the most widely recognized. Many talented young people from every corner of the world aspire to take part in it to measure their own competencies and further enhance their potential. But the IMO is not just a competition arena. It is a meeting place of the like minds and as such it provides the participants with valuable opportunities for exchange of knowledge and ideas.

Therefore, it is indeed a privilege for the Institute for the Promotion of Teaching Science and Technology (IPST) to co-host the International Mathematical Olympiad for the very first time in Thailand. IPST hopes that the Olympiad, on one hand, will not only enhance the academic atmosphere but also forge stronger international relations and better understanding among the countries. On the other hand, it will help the participating young people to realize their own talents and stimulate them to go the extra mile. Eventually, it is all for the benefits of education development and any other mathematics-based learning and undertakings.

Last but not least, IPST sincerely hopes that you will all take back with you fond memories of this event and either new or stronger friendship.

Once again, welcome to the 56th International Mathematical Olympiad!

Chairman, IPST Governing Board

Welcome message from President of Chiang Mai University, Associate Professor Niwes Nantachit, M.D.

On behalf of Chiang Mai University, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you all as participants to this 56th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO 2015). To have been chosen to co-host such a prestigious event as this ‒ the first time that this Olympiad has been held in Thailand ‒ is a great honor which we hope to justify in the days to come.

Not only is it an honor for Chiang Mai University, it is an honor for the city of Chiang Mai as a whole. Chiang Mai has a long and distinguished history dating back over 700 years as the capital of the former northern kingdom of Lanna. Even today, Chiang Mai retains many characteristics from its former past which distinguishes it from other parts of the country. Rich in culture and tradition, I hope that you will be able to experience some of this for yourselves during your stay.

Olympiads are all about bringing together talented young people from around the world to represent their countries in friendly competition. To represent one’s country on the international stage is a privilege which falls to only a tiny minority. I would therefore like to congratulate all participants for having earned the right to be here for this IMO 2015. As we all know, mathematics underpins many of today’s modern developments in science and technology and so bright young mathematicians such as yourselves are the hopes and futures of your countries. So whatever the outcome of this Olympiad may be, treasure the experience and put it to good use in the future, not only for yourselves but also for the benefit of others.

Finally, it just remains for me to thank all those people and organizations who have made this event possible, in particular the co-hosts of IMO 2015 ‒ The Institute for the Promotion of Teaching Science and Technology (IPST), the Mathematical Association of Thailand under the Patronage of His Majesty the King and the Promotion of Academic Olympiad and Development of Science Education Foundation under the patronage of Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana Krom Luang Naradhiwas Rajanagarindra (POSN) ‒ and the various committee members who have been working behind the scenes for many months to ensure that this Olympiad is a great success. Thank you to one and all.

To all participants and accompanying teachers and staff, I wish you a rewarding Olympiad and an enjoyable stay here in Chiang Mai.
Niwes Nantachit
